Burma becomes independent from the UK, as the “Union of Burma” on 4th January, 1948. First a Coup took place in 2nd March, 1962 and second Coup took place in 18th September, 1988. After Coup took place the military government is named “State Peace and Development Council” (SPDC). Since 1989 by the ruling military government is officially recognized by the UN, Burma to Myanmar.
Some national governments, such as Canada, United States, United Kingdom and most of the Burmese peoples do not recognize this name change Burma to Myanmar, they do not recognize the military government.
What is the background of Burmese refugee?
Thousands of peoples died on August, 1988 during democratic uprising in Burma (8/8/88). Thousands of peoples arrested and many people crossed over the border countries.
In September, 2007 Buddhist monks peacefully walked on the street (Know as the Saffron Revolution), which resulted in military government crackdown. Many people has been arrest and run over the border into Thailand.
Approximately 140,000 refugees still were living in Nine Refugee Camps in Thailand, plus in Malaysia.
Are any issues and problems in the U.S?
Yes, resettlement is long process and complicated. People arrive in the U.S, immediately changes in language, cultural, climate and their lifestyles. Lack of knowledge in U.S. legal system and laws, especially language difficulties.
